Meet Peter Richards, Jetco's Continuous Improvement Manager

By Brooke Beall

As our Continuous Improvement Manager, Peter does just want his titles says. He helps continuously improve upon the existing processes at Jetco. His job is to ensure we continue to reach and exceed our clients’ expectations. Peter’s background ranges from 9 years in the UK Army working in military survey, including a tour of the former Yugoslavia with the UN, to 14 years working for Panalpina where he was awarded his Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma.

How long have you worked at Jetco?

4 Months

What method of continuous improvement do you use on the job that can translate to everyday life?

I like to use Best Practices and follow the DMAIC footprint that is used in Lean Six Sigma (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve & Control). Lean Six Sigma is a methodology that is dependent upon a group effort to improve performances by completely removing waste and reducing variation. If you know the problem and it’s written down, then you have a much higher percentage of completing the task. This is why people create shopping lists. It helps if written down.

Give us a few examples of how you’ve improved processes for our team and customers.

The latest improvement includes a maintenance truck scheduling dashboard. It allows for increased visibility for dispatch to know what trucks are being serviced, scheduled for service and available. This helps improve the timeliness of our services and getting trucks to them at a faster rate. Another improvement idea came from our mechanics, who suggested we use anti-freeze handlers. Which ultimately cut costs and prevented us from wasting valuable coolant each time a repair was made.

That being said, more improvements for our customers are on the way. My focus for the past two months has been on the shop, but once these projects are complete my focus will be on effective ways to improve processes for our customers.

If you were stranded on an island, what three things would you want to have with you?

My girlfriend, my dogs and a supply of food that would last until we all got too sunburnt.

If you could travel anywhere in the world that you haven’t been where would you go?

Rome would be nice!

What are you playing on your car radio?

George Ezra – my daughter’s favorite!
