Key players involved in heavy haul transport

When we secure a heavy haul load, it’s not as simple as securing a truck, trailer and driver. GTI Logistics maintains strong relationships with several key players and partners who will be involved in various stages of the move -- loading, hauling and unloading. We work together to safely and successfully transport your oversize and over-dimensional freight.

Permit Offices

Every province, state, municipality and county require permits to move heavy loads, and they each have their own requirements and restrictions.

Permits are usually issued within 3-5 business days after we apply and are issued on a one-off basis, meaning they apply to a specific load and route for a specific window of time. To apply for permits, we must submit details of the cargo, time estimates, a route survey and plan. That's why it's important for you to provide accurate details about the freight we are transporting for you. Incorrect information will result in invalid permits and delays.

State permits generally reflect local terrain, infrastructure and traffic, population density, environmental concerns and state laws. Permits can include restrictions on movement times, routing and supporting equipment.

Escort Vehicles

The dimensions and weight of the load and on what roads it is traveling determine the number of escort vehicles or pilot cars needed, which will vary by state or province. These vehicles are clearly identified – with lights, flags, signs and height poles – and help manage traffic surrounding the load.

Once we understand the equipment dimensions and weight, origin, destination and value, we have longstanding relationships with escort vehicle companies that we secure for your move.

Utilities & Tree Services Companies

Depending on the load dimensions and the route planned, we may need to involve utilities and tree trimming companies if power lines and trees along the route hang too low across or alongside the roads.

We often drive the route ourselves before the move to understand the trees and power lines hanging over the roads, and then we take into consideration weather, traffic conditions and other factors.

Crane & Rigging

The load must be prepped correctly and safely secured before being loaded onto a truck and trailer for transport and for the eventual unloading at its destination. We work with you and the crane and rigging company to understand the load weight, volume and balance. Knowing those factors and keeping an eye on weather conditions will help determine how, with what equipment and when the cargo can be loaded.
